RDS Student Art Awards 2011

My work "So Many Worlds" was selected through open submission for the RDS Student Art Awards held at the RDS in July. The exhibition continued to Farmleigh Gallery at Castleknock where the exhibition is on until the 16th of October. From Farmleigh's website: "Selected entries received from artists throughout the countries art colleges are displayed during exhibition at Farmleigh Gallery to allow the work of Ireland’s most talented arts students to be viewed by a wide audience showcasing the latest contemporary art works being created in Ireland. From painting, sculpture, and printmaking to installations and film screening, there is something for all who have an interest in the visual arts."

‘So Many Worlds’ is the title for a series of nine paintings for the IADT Graduate Show which is on between the 4 - 11 June 2011 at the Institute of Art, Design & Technology Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.

This work is about metamorphic change, stages of the day or moments in the creation of the world. Shapes and compositions that suggest religious domes, tower like mountains, high horizons, reflected views or ambiguous meetings between the sky and earth.

They are landscapes transformed by the spiritual code of colour to reinforce a sense of otherworldliness.

These are some studies moving on from previous posts. I'm exploring slight changes in the one image using photoshop with some very interesting results. I'll be taking one of these small thumbnails and creating a small painting from it to see how it turns out.

Patria - An Artist's Book

'Patria' is a latin word for one's native country or homeland. This is a step on from the previous painting "Homeland".

This small artist's book is a response to a brief for an artwork to go into the Vending Machine Gallery happening in IADT at the end of March 2011.

It is a unique piece, small in size (90 x 94mm folded size) with an accordian fold, embossed title "Patria" on the cover in black paper, presented in a plastic case.

Images of the VENDING MACHINE GALLERY opening night will be posted at a later date!

Here is some collage work undertaken to get the creative juices going. I have taken apart some colour copies and joined bits and pieces together to investigate some fictional landscapes.

A collage (From the French: coller, to glue) is a work of formal art, primarily in the visual arts, made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole.

The work above is from the Group show, "Casual/Causal". It was held at IADT at the end of November 2010. My work involved a display of one large monochrome abstract landscape, titled "Fortress Image I", and a smaller drawing of the same image titled "Fortress Image II".

'WINGS' A solo exhibition based on the Irish Air Corps held at Waterford City Library

This was a project of paintings based on the activities of Ireland's only military air base at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel, Co. Dublin.

These paintings have been exhibited twice so far. The Riverbank Arts Centre, Newbridge, showed the paintings in May of 2010 as part of a two man show titled 'MILITARY ZONES'.

The second exhibition 'WINGS' was a solo show for Waterford's Imagine Arts Festival and took place at Waterford City Library between the 18 - 30 October 2010.
